knew when?

Most astounding quote of the day:

"We already knew that." —Dick Cheney

This is what he told a group of supporters yesterday, referring to the findings of chief U.S. weapons hunter Charles Duelfer that Iraq had no weapons of mass destruction. It's not clear whether Cheney meant that since the invasion, we've already known that there were no weapons of mass destruction, or whether he means the administration always knew this. Either way, he's being completely blasé about the war.

Second most astounding quote:

"Iraq did not have the weapons that our intelligence believed were there. The accumulated body of 12 years of our intelligence and that of our allies was wrong." —Bush

It's always refreshing to hear some honesty. But when I read part of this quote in the article mentioned above, I wondered whether the reporter got it wrong. Would Bush really admit this? But then I found another article with the longer quote from Bush. I can only hope things continue to go downhill for his administration. The timing of this report could not have been better: early enough to have an impact, late enough that it will be hard to patch up the damage.
