the tax divide

A friend of mine got spooked, understandably, a couple years ago when the IRS said she'd soon be audited. She worked at a restaurant and didn't report her tips, so she was afraid the man was going to come down on her hard.

It turned out it was just a practice audit to give a new IRS employee practice, and whatever they found wouldn't be held against my friend. She even got out of the practice audit, so she was lucky. But this, no. 134 on McSweeney's list of Daily reasons to dispatch Bush, might explain why my friend got audited.
Under the Bush administration, the Internal Revenue Service has increased its auditing of the working poor; it has audited corporations and high-income citizens at record low levels.
