"the funniest man in america"

Even if you're a Simpsons fan, you probably haven't heard of George Meyer, though he's the one making you laugh. His title is "executive producer," but he's sort of head writer and editor and guiding light. (How do you put that in a job title?)

Here's a fascinating and sometimes hilarious profile of Meyer from 2000 in the New Yorker. It's strange that "the funniest man in America" (as a former colleague called him) doesn't seem very happy. His jokes in the article are off-the-cuff. No comedian schtick here. But you get a glimpse of where his humor bubbles up from.
