This equipment looks straight out of 1960s sci-fi. But stuff like this is still in use. This pic is from KEK, the Japanese particle physics lab.

It's a "preaccelerator," used to get particles moving somewhat fast before they go into the big machine that revs them up to ridiculous energies.
